Team pilgrimage to Ely Cathedral

The children experiment with the best way to see the Octagon !

The Cathedral had a wonderful stillness about it with no other visitors but ourselves, and the subtle lighting gave the whole visit a marvellous ambiance, when, on 27 March, 33 members from Huntingdon Team churches made their way to Ely for a Pilgrimage tour of the Cathedral.
We were warmly greeted by our guide for the evening, Canon Alan Hargrave, and started our tour by walking the Labyrinth (the Way of Life) on the floor inside the West door. Whilst at this point we were shown the wonderful wall sculpture, commissioned for the year 2000, also depicting the Way of Life on the left wall inside the door. Many of our party, despite visiting the Cathedral often, had not previously noticed it!
We then moved to the Font where many of us had the opportunity of offering a prayer at the prayer net. Next, to the Lady Chapel where we tested the seven second echo and wonderful acoustics by singing the Peruvian Gloria together. The tour continued to the Alcock Chapel, Etheldreda Chapel and finally to the Octagon. A bible passage was read at each place and prayers said, and we also had the opportunity of lighting candles in prayer.

We all learnt many things which will be useful to pass on to any visitors we may take to the Cathedral in future. We concluded our visit by joining in Sung Compline in the Lady Chapel. This was beautifully lit with many candles - the whole experience was stunning. Indeed a perfect end to a quiet night!
