History

We don’t know for sure where the original Minster church of Huntingdonshire was, but there are fragments in the present St Mary’s church which indicate that a substantial church was built here at the end of the 11th century and the beginning of the 12th century and ity's is recorded in the Doomsday Book.
Most of the present St Mary’s Church was rebuilt in the latter part of the 13th century, during the last years of Huntingdon’s prosperity. The Black Death and other economic factors led to six 'lesser' parishes of Huntingdon being incorporated into the parish. Then, inexplicably, at the end of the 14th century, when Huntingdon had become something of a ghost town, St Mary's embarked on a programme of church enlargement. No doubt some of the stone from these redundant churches was used to rebuild St Mary's at the time and perhaps later at the turn of the 15th century.
